Yokogawa Electric Corporation today announced the launch of the OpreXTM Submarine Power Cable Monitoring System, which monitors cables used in power transmission at offshore wind power generation facilities. By continuously monitoring the temperature rise of submarine power cables due to damage, the product enables condition-based maintenance and reduces the operating costs required for inspection and maintenance.

OpreX Submarine Power Cable Monitoring System

Submarine cables at offshore wind power generation facilities are susceptible to failure and damage due to natural disasters and accidents. If these cables are damaged, significant economic losses may occur due to interruptions in power supply to these facilities. Therefore, regular inspection and maintenance become essential. However, cables are placed on the seabed and at long distances, and maintenance requires workboats and divers, which incurs huge costs.

By using Yokogawa's fiber optic temperature sensors*, the OpreX Submarine Power Cable Monitoring System is able to continuously monitor the temperature of submarine power cables and pinpoint abnormalities. This enables condition-based maintenance, i.e., maintenance is performed at a suitable time, thereby reducing the cost and effort required for regular inspection and maintenance and maximizing operational efficiency. It can be applied to both new and existing offshore wind farms. The product can also be integrated into Yokogawa's OpreX collaborative information server to provide video surveillance and other solutions, enabling smooth and efficient operations through the centralized management of information on the operation management screen.

With its capabilities and proven track record in the wind power industry, Yokogawa is able to provide comprehensive support for this business, from system construction to overall system maintenance. Yokogawa is committed to realizing the concept of a system of systems, where a series of independently operated and managed systems are connected to form a larger system, and providing long-term integrated support for it, contributing to safe and reliable operations.
